Frederick Bird Primary School

SLE for Science

I am an Assistant Head teacher at Frederick Bird primary School with responsibility for the co-ordination of CPD for all members of staff, overseeing the organisation of Performance Management and the induction of NQTs and newly appointed staff. In addition I share the responsibility alongside the rest of the senior leadership team to raise the standards of learning, teaching and attainment throughout the school.

Prior to my appointment as Assistant Headteacher at Frederick Bird I worked for Coventry Local Authority as a Primary Teaching and learning Consultant for Literacy and Science. I have had ten years’ experience of delivering central based training courses and providing advisory support in schools. Prior to my consultancy work I was a leading teacher for both Literacy and science and I am very passionate about both subjects.

I am a Primary Science quality Mark hub leader and have trained and guided 13 schools to gaining their awards. I have also been trained to deliver Science Learning Centre course for the West Midlands Science learning Partnership.

Last year I helped Frederick Bird Primary School to become the United Kingdom Literacy Association’s first ever winner of the Primary Literacy School of the Year Award for being” a school where literacy thrives”. Alongside our literacy subject leader I delivered a workshop at the UKLA international conference in Liverpool in July 2013 and I wrote an article on cross- curricular literacy for the English 4-11 Magazine published by the English Association and the United Kingdom Literacy Association in autumn 2013. This summer I will again be presenting a workshop at the 50th UKLA international Conference.

I enjoy helping to develop colleagues and grow potential and I see my SLE role as an opportunity to share my expertise and passion for Science and Literacy and as an opportunity to develop other s and to enhance standards and confidence in learning and teaching for the reciprocal benefit of all involved.
